We offer full service surgical care for dogs, cats and exotics. Routine surgeries as well as non-routine surgical procedures are done at our facility. Board certified specialists are part of our team to ensure that each patient receives the best and most up to date surgical care found anywhere.
All patients are monitored with state of the art pulse oximetry and heart rate equipment. Pain moderation is accomplished with pre-medication and the comfort of the patient is of paramount importance to us. All surgeries are done to reduce stress and to maintain your pet on a series of support systems such as a heated surgery table, intravenous fluid therapy when indicated and antibiotic coverage to ensure your pet has a speedy and smooth recovery.

CHECK-UP
Comprehensive examinations are part of every annual check up. Each year your pet should have the appropriate vaccinations and be checked for parasites. This may include a blood test or a stool analysis. Most importantly each patient is examined to identify any problems that may present a potential danger to the health and well being of the pet.
Each organ system is checked including the eyes, mouth, lymph nodes, ears, heart, lungs, abdomen, skin and hair coat and of cause under the tail area. Many other things are also checked by the doctor including past history, diet and overall basic care of the pet.

PREVENTIVE MEDICINE
“An ounce of Prevention is worth a Pound of Cure”. How many times have we heard this adage? How true it is that in today’s world, the informed pet owner is concerned with their pets’ health and how to maintain it. Med-A-Pet understands this very important aspect of preventative medicine. Factors such as diet, exercise, parasitic control, dental care and weight control are just a few of the important items that are carefully made part of the annual examination process. Our objective is to see your pet at least annually to ensure your pet is happy, healthy and a long lasting member of your family. Other adages apply to your pet such as “you are what you eat” and considering brands of food “you get what you pay for” does apply. Using the proper foods and dietary controls can maintain a healthy pet. Dental care is not only important to maintain healthy gums and teeth but also may extend the life of your pet. It has been demonstrated that the bacteria in and around the tooth and gums in periodontal disease contribute to kidney, liver and heart valve disease.

LABORATORY
Here at Med-A-Pet we offer “state of the art” laboratory testing. On site testing for fecal ova (parasite eggs) and urinalysis, microscpic detection of internal and external parasites, cytology of microorganisms form the ear canal and detection of the feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency viruses are just some of the procedures done in our laboratory.
We are further supported by an national veterinary laboratory Antech that enable us to test and diagnose almost every pathology and condition for your pet. Included with this support is a nation wide grouup of Board Certified Specialists who are available for consultation. It is like having a specialist on our team for diagnosing and treating your pet to insure that the latest proceedures are being implimented and the most knowlwledgable people are diagnosing the condition.

PHARMACY
As a convenience to our clients, we offer a wide range of pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements for their pets. Most pharmaceuticals are specific for veterinary usage but some are the same medication as humans take with a veterinary label or actually the identical product found in the local pharmacy.
Our Staff is trained in preparing these medications for you and can answer many questions concerning how they work and what they are for. Veterinary medicine is catching up with human medicine in many ways. Some pharmaceuticals are available for pets and not for humans. It is not uncommon for a client to jokingly say, "hey doc, do you have some of that medicine for me to cure my arthritis?"
If we don't have the medication your pet needs, we can give you a prescription to get the medication at your local pharmacy. We have specialized compounding pharmacies that are able to formulate some preparations in various flavors to make them more palatable for pets. Chicken flavored anti-seizure medicine is one of them.
We can even set up for home delivery of medications that are necessary for long term treatment. Out partner pharmacy can deliver most of your pets' perscriptions...even Heartgard and Frontline... right to you door!

DENTISTRY
"PETS HAVE TEETH TOO". We pet our animals, play with them, feed them and do some routine care like grooming. But how many pet owners lift up the lips and check out their pets TEETH?
We hear clients complain about mouth odor but did you ever hear your pet complain about tooth pain? Dogs and cats and other animals with teeth, manage to "get by" with extraordinary gum and tooth disease. It is only when it smells bad that the owner is drawn to have the mouth checked out. Your pet can't request this care so it is up to us to check their teeth regularly and take care of them regularly.
Just like we should brush our teeth, our pets need their teeth brushed and cleaned at least weekly! All puppy and kitten owners are advised of this necessary care and are shown the products we have available such as pet toothpaste and brushes, pet gels, special enzyme coated chew aids and wax compounds to keep the teeth and gums free from disease and odor.
It has been documented that severe periodontal disease is harmful to the pets KIDNEY, LIVER and HEART! During the senior years, when the bacteria count in the mouth reaches dangerous levels; they filter through the pets’ organs causing damage sometimes shortening their expected life span. Not to mention the pain and suffering your pet undergoes, this condition can actually lead to loss of your pet, years before it's time.
To correct this situation, for older pets we offer PROPHYLACTIC DENTISTRY. Your pet is comfortably put under general anesthesia and the teeth are scaled with an ultrasonic probe. The calculus (hard mineral deposits on the tooth) is then removed from under the gum line with a hand scaler. After the teeth are free from disease carrying plaque and calculus, a polish is applied to seal the enamel of the tooth. An elective wax then may be applied to help prevent bacteria from reattaching to the enamel and thereby reforming the plaque that repeats the cycle leading to future periodontal disease. In all too many cases, some teeth need to be extracted because they are painful, diseased and sometimes "hanging by a thread". The pet owner must give us permission to extract these teeth prior to the procedure.
Veterinary dentistry has come a long way over the years. The profession even has dental specialists who perform root canal and orthodontics among many other services. If the pets’ mouth warrants such specialized care, we will refer your pet to a veterinary dentist.
Our staff is knowledgeable about dental care and would be happy to answer your questions. If your pet needs a check up be sure to make an appointment for your pets’ sake!

HOUSE CALLS
In 1988, Med-A-Pet Mobile Service started serving the counties of Putnam, Westchester and neighboring New Fairfield Connecticut. The concept was born out of a need to bring the animal care to the owner’s home. This service is beneficial to the pet as well as to the owner. Some pets are not comfortable being away from their home environment let alone come into an atmosphere harboring strange smells, sounds and unfamiliar furniture and glaring lights. Some pets are much calmer in their familiar surroundings.
Some pet owners find it hard to transport their animals to the clinic. Although we offer home pick up and delivery of their pet, we will come to the house to ease this burden. Some of our senior pet owners have large dogs that are a transport challenge for even the most able bodied person. Multiple pet owners find it easier to line the pets up in the kitchen and have us administer the vaccines.
Housecalls enable us to see the environment in which the pet lives in to offer advice about how to correct behavioral problems. Sometimes a very sick pet can’t be moved from it’s spot and needs us to come for an exam or treatment.
In 1997, Med-A-Pet had grown to have a clientele that demanded a clinical setting for more enhanced services. The name was changed to Med-A-Pet Veterinary Clinic and the location was moved to the town of Brewster where it is presently situated. As an important service, the housecall availability has been continued due to popular demand. We feel that our original clients who need the home services should continue to enjoy the care they have expected from Med-A-Pet for nearly 15 years. However, due to the full service nature of our clinic; the extended hours for office visit appointments, we limit our time available for housecall appointments. We therefore maintain the service but limit it to certain days and hours. Be assured if the pet(s) needs the home visit, WE WILL BE THERE!

TRAINING/OBEDIENCE

GROOMING
A healthy pet is a happy pet. Part of being healthy is keeping the pets’ coat clean and healthy. Med-A-Pet is a FULL SERVICE facility and that means your pet can receive all the care necessary to maintain good health. Our fully trained and certified groomers will go the extra length (or any length...excuse the pun) to ensure your pet is groomed properly. Most groomings include a full bath with approved shampoos and rinses.
Most people don't know that their pets skin has different properties than our own. Sometimes the pets are bathed at home with human shampoos. The pH of their skin is different than ours. We use cleansers that have ingredients that not only clean the surface of the skin but also clean deep down. Sometimes medicated preparations are necessary to remove surface scale and seborrhea.
We also carry a full line of flea and tick shampoos to ensure that your pet goes home without any "insectivorous friends". Our groomings are guaranteed to please you or we will do it again until you are.
Why not give us a try and we'll take $5.00 off of our regular grooming price.

VetScope Examinations
Med-A-Pet Veterinary Clinic has now the capability to let both the doctor and client visualize the pets’ entire ear canal. This very important video imaging diagnostic tool allows real time study and capture of images from ear canals, tooth and throat disease as well as many other places in the animals body. The video printer allows photographs to be printed out and placed into the pets’ folder for future reference.
How many times has your pet had a condition cured and you would like to see how it looked before and after the treatment years later. This device even allows the veterinarian to transmit images through the Internet to specialists who review the photos and offer expert advice to the treating veterinarian. This sometimes eliminated the need for the pet to be referred to a specialist and saves the client time and money as well as saving the pet from more unnecessary stressful examinations. Additionally should the specialist need to see the pet, these photos will assist in hastening the diagnosis.
Med-A-Pet is continually committed in having the most up to date equipment available and the VetScope is an example of this.

Radiology
Med-A-Pet offers radiographic diagnostics. Radiographs are just one piece of the diagnostic puzzle that aids the veterinarian in formulating a diagnosis. Radiographs are sometimes reviewed by board certified radiologists to ensure expert opinions are included in the patients treatment plan. The radiographs are shown to the pet owner to enhance the clients understanding of the pets condition.
